This is the zoo with the most visitors in Japan, and was opened on March 20, 1882 as the first zoo in Japan. Currently about 3,000 animals from 400 species are being kept (as of January 2016), and you can encounter animals not just from Japan, but from all over the world. The first animals that catch your eye when you enter the zoo are the giant pandas "Ri Ri" and "Shin Shin" who are the most popular animals in the zoo. They are known not just as a symbol of the zoo, but of Ueno as well.
